Fire Staff Twirling Course

This is the outline for the fire staff twirling course which can be learned as a series of private workshops. Though the total course is 12 weeks long, and students are welcome to progress through the course at their own pace. Experienced twirlers are always welcome and encouraged to revisit previously completed workshops to enhance techniques and be introduced to advanced manoeuvres relating to the workshop theme.

You must have completed both beginner staff workshops or be of an equivalent skill level to take these classes. Advanced workshops may be taken in any order:


Workshop Details:

The Basics (i)
This is an introductory workshop for single staff twirling that is suitable for complete beginners and for those who want to refine the basic techniques for staff. It covers basic twirling theory plus a variety of fun and easy moves to get you started. This is a prerequisite for the intermediate staff workshop. This class runs every week.

Intermediate Staff (ii)
This is the second workshop in the staff twirling series and builds on the basic moves taught in 'The Basics'. Learn creative ways to turn your body around the staff, and the staff around your body, plus compound spins such as the 'fountain' and threading between your legs. This is a prerequisite for all the advanced staff workshops. This class runs every week.

Understanding Beats (A1)
Students must have completed the intermediate staff workshop or be of an equivalent skill level to take this class. 'Understanding Beats' introduces you to the beat theory and how to spin a 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 beat spin without releasing your grip on the staff. Beat modifications can easily be applied to any known moves to create a varied and compelling fire dance. This is a prerequisite for the 'Double Staff Twines' workshop.

The Horizontals (A2)
Students must have completed the intermediate staff workshop or be of an equivalent skill level to take this class. Break free of conventional planes and discover 'The Horizontals'! Learn a variety of creative horizontal moves at varied heights around your body including behind the back, ankle spins and an introduction to 'ground work'.

Spin Variations (A3)
Students must have completed the intermediate staff workshop or be of an equivalent skill level to take this class. Learn some simple techniques to apply to the moves you already know and create varied twirling effects. This workshop introduces finger twirling, palm spinning and other spin variations with a strong emphasis on creativity.

Single Staff Throws (A4)
Students must have completed the intermediate staff workshop or be of an equivalent skill level to take this class. Learn how to control your throws (and catches) with a variety of throwing techniques. Suitable for first time and long time staff throwers. This is a prerequisite for the 'Double Staff Throws' workshop.

Intro to Contact Staff (A5)
Students must have completed the intermediate staff workshop or be of an equivalent skill level to take this class. The latest craze in staff twirling is contact staff: spinning without using your hands! Learn how to manipulate a staff that is spinning around your body with these easy to learn techniques.

The Interactive Workshop (A6)
Students must have completed the intermediate staff workshop or be of an equivalent skill level to take this class. Often, staff spinning is entirely a solo art. Engage others and learn how creatively pass a staff between spinners and interact with others to create a variety of interactive, multi-person spinning effects.

Intro to Double Staff (A7)
Students must have completed the intermediate staff workshop or be of an equivalent skill level to take this class. Suitable for first time double staffers and those aiming to refine technique. Discover the theory behind double staff twirling and learn a series of simple yet spectacular double staff twirling moves. This is a prerequisite for the 'Double Staff Twines', 'Double Staff Throws', and 'Creative Double Staffing' workshops.

Double Staff Twines (A8)
Students must have completed the 'Understanding Beats' and 'Intro to Double Staff' workshops or be of an equivalent skill level to take this class. Double staff twines create a weaving illusion around the body. Learn to combine these highly visual moves to create a spectacular series of spinning effects.

Double Staff Throws (A9)
Students must have completed the 'Single Staff Throws' and 'Intro to Double Staff' workshops or be of an equivalent skill level to take this class. Build on throwing confidence and technique with a series of creative double staff throws including split releases, kick ups and compound throws.

Creative Double Staffing (A10)
Students must have completed the 'Understanding Beats' and 'Intro to Double Staff' workshops or be of an equivalent skill level to take this class. A great workshop to extend your double staff twirling repertoire, suitable for double staff twirlers of all skill levels. Play with horizontal spins, changing planes, switching hands, split beats and more.
